Drawing inspiration from butterfly biomechanics research—specifically irregular wing flapping and the ‘flap-stretch’ mechanism—I endeavoured to replicate the dynamic nuances of butterfly flight in VR with 1:1 accuracy. A complex control logic was devised.

While this design theoretically approximates butterfly flight most closely, user testing encountered obstacles: participants found it laborious to learn, experienced arm fatigue within minutes, and focused entirely on ‘maintaining flight’, rendering them unable to properly observe the virtual environment or experience the butterfly's sensory world.

I have deeply integrated this flight logic with visual design: using head movements to steer direction and arm rhythms to generate forward momentum. Approaching flowers triggers special effects like energy particles and flowing light.

Hands, ears, and eyes synchronise in unison, transforming flight from mechanical “movement” into a breathing experience. User testing confirms this approach: learning becomes more intuitive, allowing focus to shift towards observing surroundings and interacting with flowers, while clearly embodying the sensation of “being a butterfly”.

Tactile:  The controllers no longer vibrate continuously, but deliver ‘short, crisp, springy vibrations’ when the hands swing downwards, perfectly synchronised with the visual flapping of wings and the sensation of exerting physical force;
Auditory: Replacing ambient wind sounds with wing-flapping audio—each downward swing of the hands is met with a precise ‘flap’ sound at the ears, perfectly synchronised with the motion.

Touching the Giant Flower.

The giant flower puts participants into the butterfly’s view, where the world looks bigger and familiar things become strange and new. When they touch it, petals and sounds burst out, showing that even a small action can cause a strong response in this tiny life scale. Then, the moving lines and shining dots between the flower and the space look like energy being passed on, spreading through the air and symbolizing the invisible connection and exchange between nature and the individual.

Luminous blossoms unfurl with the breeze.

As the butterfly gathers nectar, petals begin to drift upward and glimmering points of light appear, as though energy were being transmitted through the air. These transformations symbolise the exchange between butterfly and blossom – a natural cycle of giving and receiving.

After gathering nectar, the flowers' energy continues to flow. Your wave seems to paint in the air, and petals gently materialise.
A blue-violet halo drifts with the breeze, becoming the rhythmic breath where inner state and surroundings resonate.

Automatically blooming flowers and points of light.

Automatically blooming flowers and emerging ultraviolet points of light appear not merely as revealed hidden energy layers, but as natural signals perceptible only through the butterfly's vision. These flickering points of light resemble pulsing energy radiating outward from the petals, as if engaging in silent communication with participants.

Guided by the Trail of Light.

The swarm of butterflies became guides of energy, leading participants to ascend along the trail of light until the music and illumination gradually faded, leaving only lingering resonance and a sense of tranquil sublimation.

This evoked an interaction beyond the senses—establishing a subtle yet profound connection between energy and life.

Participants reach out to touch → Triggering a natural response (petal particles and  celebratory  sound effects)  creating a sense of interaction and surprise.

Upon approach  → The “Bloom with the Wind” effect is triggered, petals scattering upwards as though carried by air currents.

With a mere wave of your hand → The petals will unfurl along your path.

To the butterfly's eye, the hidden ultraviolet pollen becomes visible, shimmering upon the petals like nature's secret signal.
